This is the fifth of our series of short messages on each of the Great Advent Antiphons, used on the last seven days of advent.
O Morning Star,
splendour of light eternal and sun of righteousness:
Come and enlighten those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death.
A literal translation of the Latin ‘O Oriens’ is ‘O Rising Sun’, but the poetic ‘O Morning Star’ or ‘O Dayspring’ is often used instead.
Today is the shortest day of the year. We are literally waiting for the sun to rise and dispel our darkness. We hope and trust that Spring will come and bring new life and understanding.
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined.” Isaiah 9:2
