Fourth Antiphon

December 20, 2019

This is the fourth of our series of short messages on each of the Great Advent Antiphons, used on the last seven days of advent.

O Key of David and sceptre of the House of Israel:
You open and no one can shut;
You close and no one can open.
Come and lead the prisoners from the prison house,
those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.

The Hebrew word for key used in the original text means an opener. A sceptre is a symbol of sovereignty or supreme authority. We are waiting for someone who has the authority to open up the way for prisoners to escape darkness and death.

What is it that imprisons us? We are incarcerated by envy, regret, distrust, and despair. By addiction, destructive behaviour, and all kinds of poverty.

Jesus said ‘I am the Way and the Truth and the Life.’ John 14 v 6
