This is the third of our series of short messages on each of the Great Advent Antiphons, used on the last seven days of advent.
Thursday 19th December
O Root of Jesse, standing as a sign among the peoples;
before you kings will shut their mouths,
to you the nations will make their prayer:
Come and deliver us, and delay no longer.
Isaiah prophesied (11 v 1) :’A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a branch will bear fruit.’ We are waiting for new life to come from the dead stump of an old tree.
Furthermore, this new branch and its fruit will not be an exclusive family tree, but a sign for all peoples. Its flowering will silence the voices of the earthly rulers, and inspire people from all nations to prayer.
The New International Version translates it as ‘In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.’ (Isaiah 11 v 10)
Jesus said ‘I am the vine, you are the branches’ (John 15 v 5). We are all involved in this coming to pass.
