A break from the norm

March 13, 2015

As the weather brightens, it’s time for the homelessness schemes that Church Housing Trust raises funds for to start planning summer trips and activities.

Fresh air and a break from their daily routine in supported housing does wonders for Riverside’s homeless residents.

We’re always happy to see your donations going towards a much-needed outing, giving them a chance to socialise, grow in confidence and have new experiences.

You can see the hugely beneficial effects of a trip to Brighton beach on the faces of residents from Queen Mary’s in Westminster.

A central London supported housing scheme, Queen Mary’s works with women from the age of 18 upwards who have mental health issues.

Although the scheme provides a safe, supportive environment where these women can truly flourish and find their own paths, their city centre surroundings can sometimes be a bit oppressive.

A small group of residents were very pleased to take a day trip to Brighton and experience its sights, sounds and seaside cuisine, as described by one resident, Rhoda:

“We went to Brighton with staff at Queen Mary’s Pathway in Victoria in Westminster in London. We took the train from Victoria to Brighton.

“We went straight to the beach and stood by the sea. It was quite stony but the sun was out and we took lots of pictures.

“We went along the pier and played the machines. Some of us lost money in the machines. Some of us went on the rides and had fun hanging upside down while spinning around. We had our pictures taken as pirates.

“We walked along the beach and found a café where we could have a meal of fish and chips.

“We came back to Queen Mary’s; it was a great day.”

To help more homeless and marginalised people like Rhoda grow and develop their confidence, please donate today.
